信眾提問：吃長素可否吃不能孵出小雞的蛋，比如歐洲的蛋。是否謂之葷中素。

Questioner：Can long term vegetarians consume unfertilized eggs, like eggs from Europe? Is this considered vegetarianism although it is derived from animals?

海濤法師：（搖頭）如果你去看片子，他們為了孵育母雞，小雞生出來，只要公的，就馬上把它絞成肉醬。絞成肉醬，然後再給母雞吃。

Master Hai Tao：(shakes head). If you watch online videos, for the sake of rearing hens, when the eggs hatch into chicks, as long as it is a male chick, they (the rearers) will immediately grind them into minced meat. After the male chicks are ground into minced meat, this minced chicken meat is then fed to the adult hens.

如果是母雞呢，現在有兩種方法。

What about adult hens? Currently, there are two ways to go about it.

一種，一出來就把它嘴巴剪斷。養在籠子裡面最多活兩年，生到不能生蛋了，就把它絞成肉醬。

One, once the female chicks are hatched, their beaks are cut off immediately. After being caged up, they can live for at most two years, when they can no longer produce anymore eggs, these adult hens are also ground into minced chicken meat.

一種，是在它的鼻子這邊（鼻樑），插一支牙籤，插過去。插過去以後，再裝一個眼鏡，把它的眼睛蓋起來。 這只雞隻能看到它的飼料，它看不到對面的雞，所以就不互啄。它一輩子都戴眼鏡。事實上是把它眼睛擋起來，雞就不互啄。不然你幾千幾萬隻（雞）養在一起，雞如果互啄，會將對方啄死。

Another way is to use a toothpick and pierce through the beaks (bridges) of the females. After being pierced, they are then made to wear shades to cover up their eyes, forcing them to be able to see only the animal feed in front of them. They cannot see the other hens around them, hence they will not peck and attack the other hens. These hens are made to wear the shades for their entire lives. When chickens are made to wear shades to cover up their eyes, they will not peck at and attack each other. If not, when thousands of chickens are reared together in the same space, once they start to peck at and attack each other, they will not stop till the other chicken being attacked, dies. They will peck the victim to its death.

雞很奇怪。一隻（雞）如果被啄，幾百隻（雞）都去啄那一隻。所以他們（養殖者）就會損失。乾脆把它眼睛（擋起來），就像那個馬。馬把眼睛擋起來，對不對。它只能跑、跑、跑，它看不見前面。

When a chicken is being pecked at and attacked, hundreds of other chickens will also peck at and attack that same chicken. (Till that chicken dies.) Hence they (rearers) will suffer a loss. Therefore they might as well make the chickens wear shades, like the horse. Horses wear blinkers (shades), right? It can only run, and run, and run, not being able to see what is ahead at all.

但是那個雞很可憐。而且他們弄的時候是牙籤把這個鼻子穿過去，你看多痛。或是把它嘴巴剪斷。為了要孵出蛋，這些母雞一輩子被虐待。公雞、小公雞殺掉。

Hence chickens are really very very pitiful. When their noses are being pierced, sharp toothpicks are used to pierce through the whole beak. Can you imagine the pain? Or their beaks are cut off. All for the sake of being able to produce eggs. These hens are abused their entire lives, from the second they are hatched, till they die. Roosters and male chicks are killed.

各位，並不在於討論說這個蛋是葷、還是素。而是它的來源不慈悲、殘忍。

Everyone, the point of the discussion here is not about whether eggs are considered vegetarian, or not. The whole point is that the way and method of getting these eggs, these eggs' origins, is totally not merciful at all, and is totally cruel.

你要吃到的蛋，都是殺了多少的小公雞。而且這個雞，它要效率。三十四個鐘頭就要產出一顆蛋，他們科學上。如果花太多時間，這雞就要殺掉。他們都算好了。你沒有產出一個雞蛋，養你就划不來。所以它要一直打針、一直打針。

How many male chicks have been killed just to derive the eggs which you consume?! And (in this modern age), it is all about productivity when it comes to production of eggs. According to scientific research, an egg must be produced (by the hen) every 34 hours. If the hen is taking too long to lay an egg, it will be killed. They (the researchers) have already calculated that that is the most efficient productivity level (for these eggs). If you (the hen) don’t produce an egg, it is not economical to rear you and keep you alive at all. So the hen must keep receiving injections after injections continuously (to boost its egg production).

所以，因為如此。

Hence, for all these reasons (stated above, eggs should not be consumed).

譬如說，你吃牛角。牛死掉了，我才吃牛角。問題是，它是屬於動物的身體。並不是說，雖然這隻牛死了，但是你去吃它，就不慈悲。因為人不是死了就算了。雞也不是死了就算了。它會執著這個身體是我的，你怎麼去吃我的身體。就像一個女人好了。一個女人已經死掉了。一個男人去強暴這個死掉的屍體，報紙經常有。請問這個男的有沒有罪？這個女人做鬼也會找你。重點是如此。而不是說它死了、它有沒有交配。

For example, you consume the horns of the cows. The horns are consumed only after the cows have died. However, the horns came from the cows, so they are part of the cows. The point is not about not being merciful because you consume part of the cow only after it has died. The reason is that when a person dies, it is not over. Things do not end after your death. It is the same for the chickens. Things do not end after their death. It will keep persevering with the notion that the body is theirs, how can you and why are you consuming my body? Take for example, a woman. Let’s say a woman has died and a man rapes the body of the dead woman, and this is often reported in the newspapers. Is that man guilty of sin? Even after the woman has turned into a ghost, she will haunt the man who has raped her dead body. And THAT, is the main point of this discussion. And not about whether the chick has already died, or whether the egg has been fertilized.

所以各位在這一點，不要再吃雞蛋，好不好。

So everyone, let us stop consuming eggs. Alright?

你講不出聲。好好吃，好香。我自己不吃沒關係，我要給我孩子吃。有時候很愚癡。你沒吃就算了。你還要害你孩子。

Everyone seems speechless. (You must be thinking) Eggs are delicious, they are really fragrant. It is alright even if I do not consume eggs myself, I must let my children consume eggs. Sometimes, (humans) can be really silly and persistent. If you do not consume eggs, so be it. (But) You still want to harm your children (and let them commit sin).

所以各位，蛋真的很香、很香、很香。但是你知道這個“很香”是從很苦、很苦、很苦來的。多想幾次，想到你吃不下，代表你有悲心了。

Hence everyone, eggs are really, really, really fragrant. But do you know that this “really, really, really fragrant” comes from a path of such hardship and suffering? Really a lot, a lot, a lot of hardship and suffering (by the chickens). After thinking about it for a few more times, and you realize that you no longer have the heart to consume eggs, you cannot bear to eat eggs anymore, this will show that you already have a benevolent and repentant heart.

如果你方便到養雞工廠，或是現在網路上面都有，我剛才講的小公雞就輾掉。選出來以後把它丟下去，然後下去就是絞肉機，絞成肉醬，馬上！可憐到極點！

If you are able to visit a chicken farm and it is convenient for you to do so, or (search for) the information all over the internet, (you will be able to see with your own eyes regarding) the male chicks being tossed aside. After being picked out and tossed aside, at the end of this, its fate is to land inside a meat grinding machine, and ground into minced chicken meat. Immediately! This is really extremely pitiful!

所以你要想想看。他為了要得到很多雞蛋。

So everyone, please think it through. All these, just so that they (the rearers) can get more eggs, and have more eggs produced.
